Specifically, the first contract consisted of the installation and commissioning of 17 API-610 pumps, including engineering, procurement of the necessary supplies, civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation works, and commissioning of the equipment. The second, in a consortium with Berkes, covered piping work for the repair, modification and replacement of refinery piping associated with crude oil and derivatives, steam, drinking and industrial water, and compressed air.

Like all the other works carried out during the refinery’s regular shutdowns, these works aim to improve the efficiency of the industrial processes, as well as their energy efficiency and environmental impact.

At the peak of activity, Ingener employed more than 100 people, including highly qualified and specialized operational staff such as certified welders, pipefitters, welding inspectors, electricians and instrument technicians. Previously, during the 2017 plant shutdown, the company carried out very significant works, most notably the expansion and upgrade of the refinery’s Topping and Vacuum plant, involving civil works, mechanical installation, piping, and electrical and instrumentation installation.

This Uruguayan company, with more than 25 years in the market, specializes in engineering, construction, commissioning, and operation and maintenance services for the energy, industrial and energy infrastructure sectors. Although the company started out as a provider of O&M (operation and maintenance) services for electromechanical installations, “these 25 years have been years of constant growth and expansion, which have allowed us to establish ourselves in the market as a leader in the design and construction of energy and industrial infrastructure projects, with a significant regional reach,” said Santiago Tosar, Commercial Manager at Ingener.

Ingener stands out as the country’s leading engineering and construction company in the power generation and transmission segment. It has taken part in major projects involving wind farms, solar PV parks, thermal power plants and power transmission systems. In this regard, Tosar explained that the company’s development “has gone hand in hand with the transformation of the country’s energy mix.”

In recent years, Ingener has been part of major projects involving wind farms, solar PV parks, thermal power plants and power transmission systems: “we have been key players in Uruguay’s first energy transition, which has allowed us to apply the know-how acquired in this industry in other countries in the region,” Tosar noted. This experience leads the company to see itself as a key player in the country’s new challenge: “we see a great opportunity for Uruguay in implementing the green hydrogen economy, which is shaping up as Uruguay’s second energy transition,” said Tosar. He added: “at Ingener we want to be part of this development and are working along these lines, participating in the Uruguayan Hydrogen Association, continuously training our professionals in this field and working on projects for its use in the country.”

International future

This drive for change led the company to explore other areas beyond its traditional expertise, which in turn took it across borders: “our history has been one of constant growth and change.” “While we maintain our line of work within the energy sector, we have developed highly relevant capabilities and experience in the industrial sector, particularly in Oil & Gas—working not only in Uruguay but also in Argentina—and in electro-intensive industries, associated with large computing center projects (Data Centers),” said Tosar.

The internationalization of this Uruguayan company began in Bolivia in 2015, with major energy infrastructure projects. In 2016 it entered Argentina, where it has maintained uninterrupted activity ever since. And in 2021 it arrived in Paraguay, where it is working on a 500 kV substation of great importance for the country’s power system.

Counting all its activities at home and abroad, Ingener currently employs some 900 people, 300 of whom are permanent staff.

Article published in El Observador on Ingener’s participation in the plant shutdown at ANCAP’s La Teja refinery. With two contracts involving the installation of pumping equipment and the repair, modification and replacement of piping, Ingener once again took part in a technical maintenance shutdown at ANCAP’s refinery.
